Blizzard kills LAN support in Starcraft 2

Fingers are still crossed for 2009 release of Starcraft 2, but now with a bitter aftertaste. It appears that Starcraft 2 will lack support for multi-player games over LAN network. Multi-player will be supported only over internet via Battle.Net service. Everyone was aksing why on earth they did that?

“We don’t currently plan to support LAN play with StarCraft II, as we are building Battle.net to be the ideal destination for multiplayer gaming with StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games. While this was a difficult decision for us, we felt that moving away from LAN play and directing players to our upgraded Battle.net service was the best option to ensure a quality multiplayer experience with StarCraft II and safeguard against piracy.”

Said Bob Colayco from Blizzard.

StarCraft 2, keeping our fingers crossed for 2009

More than ten years have passed since the Blizzard‘s release of StarCraft. StarCraft is a Real time strategy game with Sci-Fi theme. Many people consider it as the best RTS game even today. Blizzard really hit the nail on its head with StarCraft, it is the fourth best-selling game on PC right behind World of Warcraft on third place and The Sims 1 and 2 in front1.

Three completely different races with completely different units where every unit is unique resulted in a lot of different tactics and careful micro management. Playing StarCraft is an art of knowing each unit and knowing when to use them. With careful tactics and right units you can stop your opponent when he tries to perform a rush-attack with only a handful of units.

Therefore it is not surprising that StarCraft 2 is one of the most expected games in the history of gaming. I would say that it comes close to Duke Nukem Fornever. With a minor but important difference. Starcraft 2 is not such vaporware. In a recent interview at DreamHack in Stockholm with lead designer and lead producer of the game we were told that Blizzard will try to release the game in 2009, but they won’t release if it isn’t ready.

In a way, they have a deadline but it is kind of moot.

Edit: Here’s a link to the battle report of an actual game play.
