Review: Alien Frontiers

This game was brought to my attention through the Kickstarter.com site followed by the BoardGameGeek.com site. There were numerous reviews and one of them persuaded me to buy the game from second printing while it was available in Europe. The curse of US games is that they require EU distributor which takes down some of the shipping costs. Since I am a nut for space themed games, I was sure this game would not disappoint me.

Publisher will try to lure you with a slogan

“Alien Frontiers is a game of resource management, worker placement, and area control set in a retro-future scifi universe”

and they are right. It is a science fiction themed, territory building dice game. Yes a dice game. And although I dislike dice in games I have dusted off my dice tower because this game gets away with it. Mechanics which will compel players to play the game include

  • Area control – players are rewarded for controlling an area of the board
  • Worker placement – players draft actions from the final or variable set available to them
  • Dice rolling – game uses dice – for RNG purposes

Frozen Synapse – Turn based tactics are back

Frozen SynapseFrozen Synapse is a new indie game from Mode7 Games.  How many of you are old enough to remember Laser Squad on Amiga? How about UFO / X-COM series from PC or perhaps Fallout Tactics? Frozen Synapse is a turn based tactics game with a relatively simple goal. You get a small pack of soldiers each carrying a certain weapon and you have to complete your mission in a limited number of turns. Missions can range from killing all enemies in the building or getting your units into a certain area to escorting a V.I.P. through a building or collecting few items and getting them out of the harms way. The main difference between Frozen Synapse and Laser Squad or X-COM is that in the former game both sides are planning their turn at the same time. When planning is complete both plans are executed simultaneously and this can result in many different and, especially, unpredicted situations. Read on for awesome screen-shots, game videos and more detailed game description.

Dust 514 – EVE for Consoles

Dust 514 is a codename for a game which has been in development for almost two years. Made by CCP in cooperation with Sony Entertainment it was finally announced on E3 2011 that game is becoming a reality.

Little is known about the game. Apparently it is a FPS and MMORPG hybrid. CCP’s creative director in charge of Dust 514, Atli Mar, calls it Persistent Shooter. Shooter because basically it is a first person shooter and persistent because it will have you coming back for more by combining elements of FPS and MMORPG and giving console players the unique experience in the world of EVE OnLine.

Level 7 Announcement

On June 19, Privateer press announced that they will release a new product in science fiction setting called Level 7.

Google has some interesting results, but what stands out for me is Level 7 science fiction novel by Mordecai Roshwald. Speculation at this point but maybe the setting will be taken from the novel. We can only hope that this product will be compatible with Warmachine or Hordes products already published by Privateer press.

We will be closely monitoring this development.
