Kazam receives an update … again

Kazam 0.90 Region recording

Custom region recording.

Kazam 0.91-ubuntu5 and ubuntu6 for Oneiric Ocelot and Precise Pangolin packages are available. Source code is acab be found in the standard place on Launchpad. This is the last planned release before 0.92 which will be a week before Precise Pangoling Feature Freeze. Right now there are no immediate plans for adding new features before 1.0 release. Kazam release will coincide with Precise Pangolin release. So, a quick rundown of new feature in this release:

  • Gtk3 port is finally complete.
  • Appindicator will now fall back to Gtk.StatusIcon.
  • It is now possible to record custom screen region.
  • Recording frame rate is now a customizable option from 1 to 60 frames per second.
  • If not needed or wanted, mouse cursor can be turned of in the recording.

You can get the packages from the unstable ppa. And please, do report those bugs you find. :)

  • Thank you for this wonderful software. It’s the only modern screencast software available for Ubuntu with Unity (and I already gave up to hope)…

  • I could not add a bug to the PPA bug list. The bugs are:

    1. After finishing recording with the latest PPA it tells me if I want to open it with a program or do it later. I can choose between Pitivi and Openshot so I go with Openshot but after openshot opens the video, the video only has a screenshot of the first screen of the video. Lasts for 0 seconds. It does not have the rest of the video only the first image of it. I then tried with Pitivi and it has the same problem. The video does not actually get send correctly to the video editors.

    2. When recording at 29 or 30 FPS or any other higher FPS with an Nvidia 440GTX 1GB video card but I am guessing any card, the recording is sluggish. Instead of showing smooth 29/30 FPS it shows somethings like 3fps because of the jumps between frames. It does not matter if I record it with mkv or webm format.

In all cases I recorded with sound.

    • Luis, thanks for the info. About the first bug, while your video editor is running, open a terminal and check the contents of /tmp there should be a file named kazam_*.movie try playing it with mplayer or ffplay. Also, try recording in H264 and VP8, are results the same?

When recording with higher framerate ximagesrc, which is a plugin for gstreamer, becomes quite unresponsive, this is probably something that can’t be fixed without rewriting ximagesrc. And even then you are limited by the encoders, right now H264 is a bit faster than VP8.

What happens if you try recording a smaller region?
