Review: Sid Meier’s Civilization: The Board Game

Civilization - Board setup

Board setup

It has been a while since I bought a board game and this had to change. I had three main rules to follow while considering which game to buy.

  • No dice – throwing dice takes time and it’s too random for my taste
  • Advanced game play – I didn’t want a family game, I wanted something complex, but not too complex
  • Weight of the box – rule of thumb which can indicate game complexity and lots of pretty stuff in the box

The fourth rule, well more of a guideline, was that the game had to be set in the future. I’ve been playing all sorts of games for quite some time (video and board games) and I am fed up with medieval stuff. I like tech! Lasers and space ships. In the end, Sid Meier’s Civilization was my pick. Being a fan of Sid Meier’s Civilization for a long time I didn’t want to get my hopes up too soon and my expectations were mediocre at best.

Partial solar eclipse 2011/01/04

I was lucky enough that today’s partial solar eclipse passed over my head. The only image capturing device worth mentioning was Nikon D80 with 18-70 lens. I had a tripod so I decided to literally give it a shot. The only problem was that I lacked a sun screen and I had to improvise. First few of pictures I took through a couple of CD-R’s. That worked quite ok. Then a friend came along and gave me few old 3.5″ floppy discs. Demolition was in order and here are the results of me freezing outside at -10 degrees. Celsius. :>
