Plastics here, plastics there, plastics everywhere

Kitchen plastics at LACMA

Are you sure you know what you eat and drink? Think for a while! Plastics is really everywhere – in cosmetic packaging, drinking bottles, food containers, children toys, credit cards, clothing, … It seems as we can not live without it anymore.

Plastics is organic material made synthetically or semi-synthetically. It is a polymer comprised from molecules of high molecular weight. It’s hard, soft, colored, clear and it can even smell nice (perfumed). Different chemicals enable such features and/or reduce the cost of production. Some of these chemicals are very dangerous. Therefore every plastic piece should be labeled.  Are you interested in learning how to distinguish between different plastics? Read on.

District 9 – prelude to District 10

MNU Agent: MNU! We’re serving eviction notices.
Alien: What is “eviction”?

Story evolves around aliens. Aliens who visited our blue planet. For a change they did not land on the American soil. Although first contact was forced on them they did not retaliate and obliterate the Earth. And for a change we were asked to help them.Intriguing plot and so I decided to watch it.

Egoistic nations of the Earth will help poor starving refugee aliens. Sure we will. Lock them in a slum in the middle of South Africa and act like you try to help them. Eventually gain their trust and win over their superior technology. Obliterate them as a thank you and as a notice to other aliens who might be passing by. Keep them in District 9, a slum near Johannesburg. If local population becomes tired of visitors reallocate them to District 10. There we will have total authority to do all the necessary expe…

And so it begins. MNU Agents storm the District 9 and start the relocation process. Lead by Wicus Van De Mere who is played by Sharlto Copley. He is really an unknown actor but from my perspective a rising star.  Movie will surely bring some fame to director Niel Blomkamp who was, with Terri Tatchell a screenplay writer. It was produced by Peter Jackson, you know the “Lord of the Rings” guy? Good part of the movie is shot as a documentary, the other part can be described as a sci-fi thriller full of action sequences and drama. Superb acting, good CGI, interesting setting.

Simple 8 of 10((what can I say I like sci-fi with good CGI)).

Movie depicts a lot of violence, blood, body parts, aliens and human scum. R Rated so I don’t recommend that you allow your kids to watch it. Unless they have good stomach. As always here is the trailer.

CSI and sequencing – what is the reality?

3100

Recently I daily enjoyed watching CSI series on our local TV station. I am not into forensic science but I work in a lab for molecular biology and I know a thing or two about DNA sequencing. I would like to show you my perspective of the sequencing process that is simplified by the CSI series.

In school we learn about genetic material. In brief: chromosomes are composed of genes, genes are constituted of DNA and DNA is arranged in a long sequence of four different nucleotides: adenosine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G) and cytosine (C). The sequence of millions of this four nucleotide letters represents our genome. And here the real work begins. Read further if you are interested in how to obtain a sequence of particular gene, for example to determine the relationship between two persons.

Sony hurries with Playstation 3 Firmware update (v3.01)

Sony Corporation ソニー株式会社

As expected with every major update the stability of an operating system can become quite an issue. Sony‘s 3.00 firmware update about which you were informed previously is not an exception. Many issues plague this newly released monstrosity.

Among them some crashes of the best PS3 game called Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. There are also reports of bugs in friend list, dual shock 3 controllers losing signal, louder fans, poor wi-fi signal.

Since I am a PS3 user I can understand the rage of the other like me who updated to firmware to 3.00. Specially with the hardware quirks that presented themselves with the update. But for Sony the real problem is money. Games not running or crashing means loss of profit and bad publicity. Therefore Sony stepped up and announced a minor update called 3.01 which is available from the September, 14th via System update.

3.01 fixes some of the more pressing issues. Games will continue to run. So Sony says.
